If you are under 16 and thinking about starting a job, there are some things you need to keep in mind. The U.S. has a law called the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to make sure young workers are safe.

  • This law keeps workers safe from unfair treatment by their bosses. It includes special rules for workers who are under 16 years old.

  • The first law under the FLSA act is 14 is the minimum age of employment

However! This rule can be overlooked if you are working as a :

  1. Babysitter

  2. Delivering newspaper

  3. Working for your family business (unless its a factory!)

  4. Working as an actor

How many hours can you work as a 15 year old?

The Fair Labor Standards Act states that14 and 15-year-olds may only work:

  • On school days- 3 hours/day

  • On (any) school week- 18 hours/week (maximum)

  • Non-school days/weekends- 8 hours/day

  • Non-school week – 40 hour/week (maximum)

Teenagers aged 14 and 15 are restricted to working hours between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. This limit extends to 9:00pm during June 1 through Labor Day
